So, what could/should student voice be through the eyes of an educator?
Student voice is more than just choice. Student voice is about students co-creating their learning opportunities in partnership with educators. As educators we have a responsibility to recognize student strengths, embrace the individual capacity of each student, and celebrate diversity within each community of learners. By doing so, students will begin to recognize their own genius, celebrate their individuality, promote their unique qualities, and advocate for themselves as learners. When students become advocates for themselves as learners, they have the skills and confidence they need to be successful.
As educators, we need to:
→ Listen to our students and learn about what is important to them
→ Provide the valuable and critical feedback based on their strengths
→ Celebrate the ‘hiccup’ moments that students have and encourage them to persevere
